Smart N Go FAQ
Updated

What is Smart N Go?

The Smart N Go line is designed to be a revolutionary alternative to traditional vending machines as well as Micro Markets (e.g. Avanti Markets, 365 Retail Markets) where shrinkage may be hard to control.

The Smart N Go Market is equipped with secure, locked refrigerated and non-refrigerated bays to stock and display a large selection of drinks, snacks, sandwiches, salads, microwavable items, fresh brewed coffee and tea, as well as sundries like aspirin, batteries, phone chargers, etc. The Smart N Go line is designed to overcome the limitations and weaknesses of the vending industry (e.g. cannot touch products and read labels, lack of selection and product merchandising flexibility, machine malfunctions, security) and at the same time to provide consumers with an intuitive, welcoming, “high-tech” shopping experience.

How does Smart N Go work?

The operation of the Smart N Go equipment is based on usage of proprietary, patented market design and technology, which also includes universal product trays, smart dividers and accessories. All products are displayed behind closed glass doors. The doors unlock only after the customer is identified and the payment method is verified. Payment can be made by using a member account, credit card or debit card (note: mobile pay is in development and should be available at launch).  The Smart N Go system allows the detection and identification of products in real time.  When removing an item from the shelf, it automatically shows up in the customer’s shopping cart, which can be viewed on the credit card reader display as well as at the top of the unit. When finished shopping, the customer can simply walk away, and the system will automatically close out their transaction.

All members’ transactions and support, as well as all activity information and records, are managed and available online via the operator’s website. Additionally, customers can print receipts via the market payment kiosk.

Since products are displayed behind locked doors, the Smart N Go can be placed in thousands of public locations. Therefore, while the Smart N Go can support company break rooms just like the typical micro market, it is especially suitable for the lobbies of office buildings, multi-tenant facilities, colleges, airports, train stations, hotels, hospitals, military bases and thousands of other locations where people gather or pass by regularly.

What are the requirements for placing a Smart N Go?

Ideal locations are public, semi-public, or highly transient areas where shrinkage may be a concern and that can benefit from significant customer traffic in excess of 200+ people daily.

How much space do you need for Smart N Go?

The modular design of the Smart N Go makes it customizable to almost any location.  Markets can be configured with a single stand-alone module or several, combining refrigerated, frozen and room temperature units to provide comprehensive offerings.  We have developed a location builder application to make customizing a market layout easy for the operator and customer.

How many different products can each module hold?

It is very similar to traditional vending machines where you can adjust trays and slots to fit various products, so the dimensions of the products will determine how many can be held.  The modules are designed with 5 trays each, with the exception of the Main Station Terminal which only has two shelves for product merchandising.

What are the security elements of Smart N Go?

Each module of the Smart N Go has 2 front cameras that are connected to the main NVR. The recording is going on at all times.  The AMP monitor comes on when the customer opens the door. Ceiling cameras can be added.  Our team will evaluate other security options to determine if there is more than one solution we want to offer our operators, e.g. NVR and DVR solutions, cloud storage/streaming at a premium cost.

How do you deal with repair and refill issues?

While our goal is to provide an issue-free solution for all, things can still go wrong with a Smart N Go market.  We are always prepared for the worst-case scenario.  We have a staff of support specialists to assist you and make sure your market(s) are always functioning properly and are well stocked.

What are the electrical requirements for the Smart N Go line?

The Smart N Go modules are very similar to vending machines.  Refrigerated and frozen units require more power, but everything runs off standard power:  120v 20-amp circuit/main terminal, plus 120v 20-amp circuit/every 2 refrigerators.  No high voltage is required.

For further specifications, please see our Smart N Go Specs article.

In current Smart Markets, how are multiple customers at one module handled? Does the customer who opened the door with his/her card have to close the door and have the product register before the next person opens the door?

Only one customer can shop at each module at a time, so if there are multiple people at the market, they need to shop at different doors or wait their turn.  Products are registered real-time on the digital display at the door as they are removed from their position in the tray.  When the user closes the door, they close out their order and can walk away.  Or they can go to another module, scan their payment and continue shopping.  The customer needs to close the door to complete their transaction.

Are the shelves of the modules equipped with weight sensors?

No. These do not use weight sensors. They currently use infrared sensors.

Will each module need to be set with very specific planograms?

Smart N Go incorporates infrared sensors, so there is a manual process to setting up new items in the system.

What types of payment authorization will the Smart N Go System support?

Credit/Debit card, mobile pay, member account card, fingerprint.  The EMV chip card is on the roadmap.

Is there a cash option?

Yes, just like how we handle with the Avanti Markets.  Customers can add cash to a market card and make purchases with the card. Market Cards can be obtained at the Main Station Module that is designed to take cash and other payments.

What is the ramp used for and why do I need one?

The ramp is required for the first SNG purchased and is a large steel ramp.

The ramp is used for rolling the SNG modules safely off of the pallets that they were shipped on.

What are arrows / tip and tell indicators showing on the shipping crates?

An up arrow showing means that the crate had a hard movement upwards during shipping.

A down arrow showing means that the crate had a hard downward movement during shipping.

Both an up and down arrow showing means that the crate had a hard upward and downward movement during shipping.

If a tip indicator is showing, that means that the crate had a hard tip during shipping (and possible drop).

If ANY of the above are indicated:

Make sure to take a picture of the crate along with the indicator

Carefully inspect the module for potential damage and take pictures

Reach out to Avanti support if you find any damage

What are the dimensions of the modules?

See Smart N Go Specifications

What are the network requirements for the SNG?

See Smart N Go Specifications

What if we need to go through a door that is less than 82” in height?

Please work with our team before attempting to do this.

You will require a refrigerator dolly and some 2x4 pieces of wood to properly and safely navigate.

How wide must the door be to safely move the SNG modules into their location?

It is recommended that the door width be 37” to move uncrated modules through the opening.

What modules are available for a SNG?

You can order Ambient Modules for snacks, Fresh Food modules, Beverage modules and a Coffee Module.

Can I get a Freezer module?

No, a Freezer module is not available.

What Coffee brewers are available for the Coffee module??

Coffee modules can be ordered from the Avanti Order Site.

How does the Coffee module work in the SNG?

The coffee modules are integrated into the SNG system via a “Custom MDB Adapter”.  This adapter allows the SNG to communicate with the coffee machine to record sales.

All settings for the coffee machines are setup on the physical coffee machine.

Can we use a wireless modem as the connection for the SNG?

A hard wire ethernet connection is highly recommended.

You can use a wireless modem if absolutely necessary.

We recommend high gain antennae(s) and anything else that would improve the connection.

What refrigerant is used in the refrigeration module?

R290.

What is the temperature range for the refrigeration module?

33 degrees to 42 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is there a lockout for high temperature for the refrigeration module?

If the module goes above 47 degrees for more than 30 minutes the module goes into quarantine until someone (driver/support tech) clears the quarantine.

However, there are certain situations where even these flags can fail:

For Example, let's say the power goes out and the module goes above 47 degrees for 30+ minutes.  Then 8 hours later the power comes back on and the cooling unit gets back down to temperature.  The module will still be locked out, but in most cases the driver or support agent will check the current temp and assume it’s okay. They will then clear the quarantine even though the module was offline for hours and the food inside is likely spoiled.

Are the lockout temperatures and Health Timer adjustable?

Yes, this is configurable by an Avanti Install Team or an Avanti Support Agent.

Can you change an ambient module to a Fresh Food or Beverage cooler module in the field?

For Ambient to Fresh Food you simply need to replace the ambient fan cartridge with a refrigerated cartridge.

For Ambient to Beverage you would need to replace the ambient fan cartridge with a refrigerated cartridge and update the trays to pusher columns.

Can you change a Fresh Food or Beverage cooler module to an Ambient module in the field?

For Fresh Food to Ambient you simply need to replace the refrigerated cartridge with an ambient fan cartridge.

For Beverage to Ambient you would need to replace the refrigerated cartridge with an ambient fan cartridge and convert the pusher columns to compartment trays.

Can the SNG be set up for employees to use Market Cards?

Yes, the SNG can be configured to accept Avanti Market Cards.

Can the SNG support the use of membership cards (i.e. integrations with other pay services such as CBord, Blackboard etc.)?

Not today – please work with your Account Manager for specific requirements. Specific integrations would need to be built by our Development team.

Does the Avanti Mobile App work on the SNG?

As long as a customer has an account set up and is using the barcode that matches the physical market card they set up at the SNG market. This is a tricky situation, as the accounts are local to that market specifically. The consumer may also have an account for a different Avanti Micro Market and assume they can use it at the SNG.

Do fingerprints work with the SNG?

Yes, these need to be set up and registered at the Pay Station.

This feature is only available if Member Accounts are active.

We have a regular Avanti kiosk and a SNG at our location – will the Market cards & App work at both locations?

We call this the "Campus" feature for our Micro Markets. While it is potentially possible at SNG, we have not done this before and would recommend against it.

Can the SNG support two tier pricing for employees?

Two tier pricing works as follows:

The SNG offers discounted pricing for members and the percentage is configurable.

For example, let's say we offer a 10% discount. If you purchase a bottle of Coke for $1.00 and you pay by CC you will be charged $1.00 but if you use your member card you will be charged $.90

Can the SNG support use of Apple Pay or Google Pay?

Not today – that is on our roadmap for the future.

Does EMV card insertion work on the SNG?

Not today – this is on our roadmap for the future.

Can a non-market card user pay on the SNG via cash?

No, the bill acceptor is only available on the Pay Station to Members recharging their Market Cards

Can the SNG be set up to turn off acceptance of returns of products to the compartments?

No, that is a potential future feature that is being considered by the Avanti team. There are problems with this idea, though:

Sometimes the sensors “flicker” (sees a product, then doesn’t) and that would result in a charge to the customer. Plus, customers need to be able to pick up an item to check the nutrition label. If not, you’d have to post nutrition facts for all products somewhere.

Can the SNG support Payroll Deduct natively on the Market Cards?

No, this is not currently supported.

How many trays are included in each module?

The Pay Station includes 2 trays

All of the other modules include 5 trays

Do the tray columns include pushers?

The tray columns in beverage modules include pushers. However, fresh / ambient food trays use dividers to separate products and do not have pushers.

How does the SNG recognize when products are taken out/returned?

There is an array of sensors in the sensor rails of the trays to sense when products are taken and/or returned. Weight sensors are not used.

Can the SNG tray compartments be changed to accommodate different size items after initial installation?

Yes.  However, you would need to contact Avanti support in order to do this as the sensor mapping will need to be updated (1-844-MY-KIOSK). Any changes to the clear dividers requires a sensor map update.

Do the SNG modules have integrated cameras?

Yes, each module has an integrated camera and screen that shows the customer interaction with the SNG. It is recommended that you install another camera(s) pointing at the SNG’s for additional theft deterrence

Are the customer interactions via the integrated cameras recorded for future playback?

There is a setup process to be able to view the recordings from the system cameras. This is partly why we recommend an additional camera solution that offers more control.

The following information is necessary to set up NVR playback:

NVR time needs to match the PC time

IP Address setup needs to be completed and accurately reflect the module number

Need to know the exact time the incident happened

Are the customer interactions via the integrated cameras available for remote, real time viewing?

The footage is available remotely by an Avanti Support Rep but not the Operator. The Operator would need to take a USB flash drive to the location. This is only possible after following the proper setup instructions above.

Can the ‘commercial’ that plays on the screen above each module customizable?

Yes, but only by an Avanti Support Rep. Operator needs to provide the content in a supported format. Please submit a ticket to support to start this process.

This is the same for the large screen above the Pay Station.

Are the headers above the SNG modules customizable?

Yes, the headers are simply taped on the header boards – you can create your own and replace what comes with the SNG.

What back end system is used to manage the SNG?

The SNG back end system is integrated with AMS, so you use AMS to manage you SNG

Do the trays pull forward to allow for easier restock/fill?

Yes, the trays can be pulled forward and down to make fill/restock easier

Once tray fill is complete, lift the front of the tray and slide back into the module

What does a recommended driver service look like?

Please see our Smart N Go On-Site Market Service article.

How do I configure and order an SNG?

Work with your Avanti Account Manager to properly configure and order your SNG and to schedule installation.

How do I install an SNG?

Part of your order will include installation by the Avanti team – work with your Account Manager to schedule installation. You can also view our Smart N Go - Installation Guide to see the steps we will take ahead of time. It is unlikely that you would install an SNG without assistance from Avanti's installation team.

How long does it take to get my SNG?

Plan on 6 week lead time after final order is complete to schedule installation.

How do I get support for SNG issues or reconfigurations after installation?

Call Avanti Support – 1-844-MY-KIOSK. Provide email details as well. The best thing to do is contact support in a way that can be tracked and referenced. It is always recommended you submit a ticket through ZenDesk first so that we can capture all necessary details.

How long is the warranty?

The SNG warranty is 1-year from installation of the SNG

How do parts get replaced via warranty?

The best thing to do is contact support in a way that can be tracked and referenced. It is always recommended you submit a ticket through ZenDesk first so that we can capture all necessary details. Call Avanti Support – 1-844-MY-KIOSK if you need more immediate assistance.

How do I order additional spare parts for the SNG?

If you have questions about which parts you need to order, or if you are ready to place a spare parts order, please contact Avanti support. We recommend all Operators purchase a pre-built Spare Parts Kit for their first SNG install, which will cover parts needs for roughly 10 markets.

How often should you perform a full market inventory using the INV for AMS? (https://inv.mykioskworld.com/)

A full market inventory should be performed during installation right as you are making the market ‘live’

Full inventories are recommended every 30 days which is similar to the recommendation for Micro Markets

It’s VERY easy & quick! – ask your Account Manager how to perform using INV and Planograms!

How hard is it for our driver to service a market?

It is very easy - the following steps should be followed:

  • Sign in at the Pay Station and go into Market Service mode
  • Scan into each module, one by one
    • Do your resets (move product from back to front, remove spoiled items)
  • Go back to the Pay Station and input exceptions (stales, driver add, return to warehouse, ect...)
  • Upload and close
  • Scan back into the Pay Station and go into Market Service mode
  • Scan the picklist
  • Do the market restock
    • All trays can easily be pulled forward and tipped down for restocks
  • Go back to Pay Station and update exceptions
  • Upload and close
