Purpose
This document outlines how to retrofit an existing PicoCooler Vision with a new Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet.
In this article you will:
- Retrofit the existing PicoCooler Vision with a new Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet.
- Test the setup/functionality of the unit.
- Provision the Pico on the PicoCooler Vision.
Process
For any questions regarding PicoCooler Vision, please reference the article PicoCooler Vision - Operator Guide.
The Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet must be deployed to a location by 365 before it is operational. There is a QR code that is included in the package that links to the 365 Vision Smart Store Deployment Request form that will need to be filled out.
For instructions regarding the wiring of the Add-On Ambient Cabinet to the PicoCooler Vision in a non-retrofit process, please reference the article Add-On Ambient Vision Cabinet - Operator Guide.
Parts and Tools Needed
In order to setup an Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet for PicoCooler Vision the following tools are required:
- Minus Forty’s Ambient Cabinet bridge cable
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flashlight (recommended)
Retrofitting the Bridge Cable
The steps are outlined in the following sections, if further clarification is needed please refer to the instructional video, PicoCooler Vision to Ambient - Installation Guide. Or reference the online training, PicoCooler Vision to Ambient - Training.
Preparation
- Shutdown and unplug both plugs of the PicoCooler Vision. Note: The lights, Pico device, and compressor should all be off before the next step.
- Remove the front grill by removing the Philips-head screws in each corner.
- Once both screws are removed, gently pull the plate off from left to right. Please note the right side will take some pressure to pull off. Please note that it will still have a cable connected.
- Carefully remove the light power connector, and place the plate off to the side of your work area.
Installation of the Retrofit Bridge Cable
- Locate the bridge cable received from from Minus Forty to do the retrofit. One side is an 8-pin connector and the other side is the branch side which will be used on the PicoCooler Vision.
- Run the 8-pin connector end from the front, straight through the back of the PicoCooler Vision. The best location is four squares over and three down. Ensure it's not hitting the compressor and it's also not dragging on the ground.
- In the rear of both machines, connect the female 8-pin of the bridge cable to the Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet. The male connection should be hanging on the back side of the ambient cabinet.
- From the front of the PicoCooler Vision, find the 2-prong black clip. Remove the 2-prong clip from the existing wiring and attach them, lining up the clip on the male with the retaining tab of the female connection. Note: this first connection should be very simple, nothing needs to be unplugged at this time.
- On the front end of the PicoCooler vision the branch side of the bridge cable will be connected.
- Locate the male 6-pin connector with blue, gray, and black wires plugged into the PicoCooler Vision on the far left (from front)/far right (from back) and depress the clip on the tail to remove it from the port.
- Locate the same colored cables on the bridge cable and connect the female end of the bridge cable to the cable that was just unplugged. The ends should fit together.
- Use the remaining male end of the bridge cable and plug it back into the port where the original cable was seated.
- Locate the same colored cables on the bridge cable and connect the female end of the bridge cable to the cable that was just unplugged. The ends should fit together.
- Locate the male 3-pin connector with orange, black and red wires plugged into the PicoCooler Vision on the far right (from front)/far left (from back) and depress the clip on the tail to remove it from the port.
- Locate the male 2-pin connector with red and black wires plugged into the PicoCooler Vision far right (from front)/far left (from back) and depress the clip on the tail to remove it from the port.

- Locate the same colored cables on the bridge cable and connect the female end of the bridge cable to the cable that was just unplugged. The ends should fit together.
- Ignore the empty 4-pin connector, it will not be used for this project.
- Locate the male 6-pin connector with blue, gray, and black wires plugged into the PicoCooler Vision on the far left (from front)/far right (from back) and depress the clip on the tail to remove it from the port.
- Put the grill back in place, with the DueNorth (Minus Forty) light power cable reconnected.
- Take the 4 camera cables from the the Add-On Ambient unit and connect them to the back of the PC in the USB 2 Motherboard Ports.
- Bundle the camera cables from the Add-On Ambient unit and secure them depending on which bracket is installed.
-
BRACKET WITHOUT SIDE CABLE OPENINGS - secure the camera cables to the power cable. This will assist with keeping the cables together and allow easy re-attachment of the technology cover.
-
NEW BRACKET WITH CAMERA CABLE OPENINGS - Place the Add-on Camera wires into the opening and reattach Technology bracket to the side of the PicoCooler Vision.
-
Starting Up after Installation
IMPORTANT: Since the unit was unplugged, the PicoCooler Vision will need to go through the initial startup process.
- Plug power cables back in and allow the store 4-6 minutes to boot up.
- After Startup completes an error saying “Cooler Safety checks have failed” will appear.
- Use the controller a the bottom of the PicoCooler Vision to clear the error by holding the down arrow button for 5 seconds. Three lines will appear “---” when error has been cleared. For additional support regarding clearing this error please reference the article, Due North (Minus Forty) - Unlocking Coolers using the Temperature Controller.
Testing the Setup
- Check that both PicoCooler Vision and new Add-On Ambient Vision cabinet lock lights are blinking. 1 light will be green and 1 will be red. This confirms the locks are active and working, if these lights are NOT both on something was wired incorrectly.
- Run a test transaction and wait for the doors to open.
- Open the cooler door; open the ambient door.
- Close the cooler door while keeping the ambient open. The cooler door should not lock, if it does there is a wiring issue.
- Close the ambient door and open the cooler door. The ambient door should not lock as long as the cooler door is open, if it does there wiring issue.
- Close both doors, the locks should activate and as long as the device has been deployed it is ready to go.
