365 Retail Markets provides several products that require a preauthorization, or reservation transaction to initiate access to the product’s inventory. With Picocooler (Locked Configurations) and Stockwell, consumers are able to access the product by presenting a valid form of payment...either a payment card or the 365Pay mobile application (set up in advance).
When using a credit card, 365 Retail Markets will perform an estimated/pre-authorization on the card for an amount the operator preconfigures. If approved, this transaction will provide the consumer with access to the product’s inventory. After the consumer takes the items they wish to purchase, a final amount is calculated and the estimated authorization will be adjusted for what the consumer took. For example, if the operator sets the estimated authorization amount for 5.00, and the consumer takes products totaling 4.25, the 5.00 authorization will be adjusted to 4.25. This happens within minutes in most cases, but is subject to the consumer’s own card issuing bank’s policies regarding releasing funds. Some banks have taken days. This is at the control of the customer's credit card issuing bank.
Operators should take care to set the estimated/pre-authorization to an amount high enough to cover transactions. In cases where consumers take products totaling more than the estimated authorization, there is a risk that the consumer's card issuing company could decline the transaction due to attempting to process an amount beyond what was authorized. Operators will be at risk in these cases for not receiving funds for the purchase.
